About Southern Utah University

Southern Utah University, commonly referred to as SUU, is a university located in Cedar City, which is a city in Iron County, in the US state of Utah, situated 250 miles south of Salt Lake City, on I-15. Cedar City has a population estimated at a number of nearly 28 000 inhabitants, during the 2007 census, and it is best known for the fact that it is home of Southern Utah University and the Utah Shakespeare Festival.

SUU was founded in 1897, by the citizens of Cedar City, as an extension branch of the Utah teacher training school, and has had its name changed several times over the years, since then: until 1913, the school was known as Branch Normal School, afterwards, until 1953, being known under the name of Branch Agricultural College, which was changed into College of Southern Utah, remaining so until 1969, when the institution was named Southern Utah State College, until finally, in 1991, the Southern Utah University official name was settled.

Since it first opened its doors, SUU grew, having today an enrollment of approximately 8000 students from 45 states, 25 foreign countries and from 29 of Utah’s counties. The university was named one of `America’s Best Colleges` by the U.S. News and World Report, one of `America’s Best Value Colleges`, as well as `Best in the West`, by the Princeton Review, and `Top Ten Best Value in America`, by Consumer’s Digest.

The athletic teams from SUU are known as the Thunderbirds, who compete in the NCAA Division I for various sports, except football in which they compete in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, formerly known as division 1-AA), Great West Football Conference, as well as in the Summit League and in the Western Athletic Conference, including in The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, in the Rocky Mountain Region.
